Here's a sexy little song from Lil Green, written, I believe, with one William Broonzy.
Back in the mid 1960s I was an aspiring blues guitarist, with a full time office job in the City of London. I read in my 'Beat Instrumental' magazine that my hero Eric Clapton was influenced by someone called BB King. Funny name, i thought, but.. anyway.
So one lunchtime I trolled down to my local record shop, in Cheapside, and asked if they had any BB King records. The guy looked it up in hs catalogue and announced that there were three albums listed. One of them had the word 'Blues' in it so I chose that.
A week or so later the record arrived.. 'Confessin' the Blues'. It turned out that I had chosen the album with less BB King guitar on it than probably any other ever recorded. It was a kind of big band album. (Although the guitar solos, when they did appear, shone like diamonds).
And one of the tracks was 'In the Dark' .. probably the smoothest big band track of them all. No solos of any kind as I remember. It was only years later, via the internet, that I heard the original Lil Green, and surprisingly, it was pretty raunchy! Ms Green was at least having some fun with the song, which is more than I can say about BB's version.
So here it is.. my version of this grand old classic, set to a funky shuffle.
I tried it with the Strat, didn't quite work, so here it is with the neck pickup on the new Les Paul pumping out the riffs.
