Mick writes:

I may have mentioned.. (constantly and at every opportunity) that my band Killing Floor once backed Arthur 'Big Boy' Crudup at a gig, back in the 1970s. I'm always proud that I got to meet at least a couple of original Delta Blues legends, the other notable being Honey Boy Edwards, who I shared a pint with in a South London pub.

But I also always mention that I'm ashamed of having no photos of Arthur, and pretty dodgy memories. He wasn't that easy to talk to it's true, mumbling through a thick Southern accent, and I was very young.

He played with just our drummer, Bazz, and I watched the whole set, though I can't remember the songs.. I think he did 'Mean Ole Frisco'. Don't know if he did this one or not.

Anyway, great song, covered by Elvis and many others. A bit similar to his classic 'That's All Right', (Elvis's first hit), but hey .. if you've got a good idea why not make the most of it.

I've tried to make my version a bit different but keep the feel, and used mainly Arthur's lyrics, with maybe a little El creeping in. I like it - hope you enjoy it too. 'My Baby Left Me' by Arthur Crudup.

Mick Clarke - Baby Left Me Well my baby left me, never said a word
Was it something that I said, something that she heard?
But she left me, yes she left me
My baby even left me, never said a word

Now I stand at my window, hang my head and cry
My baby even me, I hate to say goodbye
You know she left me, yes she left me
My baby even left me, never said goodbye

Yeah I stand at my window, wring my hands and moan
Cryin for my woman now the one I love is gone
My baby left me, my baby left me
My baby even left me, never said goodbye

Yeah my baby left me, never said a word
Was it something that I said, something that she heard?
But she left me, yes she left me
My baby even left me, never said a word
