Otis Rush's classic, made internationally famous by being the opening track on the album John Mayall's Bluesbreakers, featuring Eric Clapton. The moment Eric hit that phrase where it breaks into a shuffle his future as 'God' was assured. Actually he was apparently trying to sound like Freddie King. Sorry Eric, you failed miserably, but in doing so invented blues rock guitar for the world.
My version's based around Otis's original. There are a few Claptonisms but I've tried to avoid them.. hey don't mess with the Beano kid. The only connections that I have with that era is that the guy who took the 'Beano' photo, David Wedgbury, also took the photo of Killing Floor for our first album. And I did get to work with producer Mike Vernon at a later date, which was a pleasure and privilege. And I did get to see Clapton and Mayall at my school fete.
I only saw Otis once and it was a little bit lifeless.. a big London concert. I walked in and thought 'who's that support band?' but it was Otis, up there from the start giving people their money's worth. But not the most dynamic gig.. I've heard him do a lot better on record.
Mind you my friend Lou Martin got to jam with him when he was in Chicago with Rory Gallagher's band. At the end of the evening Lou helped Otis pack his PA away in a cupboard. Even the greats have to stow their gear.
I enjoyed recording this.. interesting and challenging with the rhythm changes. And I kept the tempos deliberately slow to give the thing some weight. It ain't great but it ain't bad.. got a kind of live in the studio feel.. an honest bash at a classic song.
It's mainly my Les Paul with a bit of Gnasher here and there.. you won't spot it, I've practically forgotten myself. If you think you do I bet you're wrong. All Your Love.
